Incomming...

#1

Post by rtcb »

Hi everyone.

I'm new to this forum and looking to learn a few bits and pieces. Hopefully I'm in the right place.

Ultimately Im on the journey of setting up a usable TV system for the family and I am part way there.
I've got a Terrestrial aerial for local digital TV + sky dish feeding into a zgemma h7s for all the FTA channels.
I also have a debrid sub and Nvidia Shield providing on demand.

So now I am trying to learn about rebroadcast over IPTV and if anything can be done regarding unencrypting direct from the dish (softcam??)

The biggest hurdle right now for me is understanding the terms and technologies at play.
Like, I'm sure IPTV provides are not all equal in terms of quality. how does one understand the differences between whats being offered etc.

Anyway, I hope to pick up the gist of it over time. If anyone can point to a beginners guide or something to get me started, that would be great!

Cheers

Thanks for that.

Is there a particular place where I can ask some basic questions on this forum, or is that a bit frowned on?

Thanks for that.
First of all I'd like to check my understanding to make sure I am thinking about the technologies correctly.

I work in the technology space integrating and designing solutions so I can understand most things at a concept level.

I'm interested in 2 things which I understand will be quite different to each other.
1. IPTV
2. decoding Sat signals (Softcam??)

My understanding so far is:
for IPTV
It's really just about subscribing to a playlist provider. The provider does the following:
-implements some form of access control authentication. (MAC, and/or credentials)
-playlist simply points to streams that the provider controls (the quality and available bandwidth) may vary between providers??? (key consideration for me)
-load the playlist into an IPTV player and away you go!
-some providers might allow multiple devices (maybe even simultaneously?)
-the provider is transcoding and rebroadcasting a signal so there will always be a reduction from the source signal to what is actually available through IPTV

For decoding Sat signal
To replicate the function of a CAM + subscriber card + whatever the Sat company does to link the card to a subscription... There is such a thing as a softcam which can read in some kind of key which will then unencrypt the signal.
-I believe there is some form of rolling key which need to be updated (constanly/periodically, how often?)
-I guess the softcam can be configured to read from a URL to obtain/refresh keys?

Questions:
-is there particular feature names or language used to describe the differences in quality or offering from IPTV providers?
Particularly interested in things like stream bits per second, or FPS, or total provider bandwidth per customer (contention ratio)

-for softcam on enigma2, does it behave like any Sat signal? i.e. can I then access the channel over the network like other channels? Maybe even via a 2nd enigma box in client mode?
-is using a softcam fairly painless once it is set up or does it require a good bit of maintenance/management? is it "wife proof"? lol
-if softcam is not what I think it is, is there another solution I should look into to decrypt Sat broadcasts?
-do suppliers or hosters of keys for softcams, provide keys on a best effort basis or are they very reliable? are we talking a subscription or do people do it for the love?

In may case, I would be happy with just the SkyUK channels for the very occasional sports event.
I feel like everything else is availabe to me already between live FTA channels, VoD providers, and a debrid service.

Thanks so much for allowing the questions.
